Do you want to color your home interior with gray paint but feel tired of gray paint choices that do not stay gray because of the undertones that make it harder for you to find the right interior color scheme?
Are you facing some difficulties in looking for true gray paint colors with no undertones?
If yes, you should not look any further since the most remarkable choices are given by Benjamin Moore, an American paint producer that was founded at 1883 and is also known to be one of the most popular paint brands at this point of time.
This post will tell you complete information about Benjamin Moore true gray paint colors that come with no undertones.
Besides, you will also find some other related information that will make you understand better about paint color undertones, especially for gray paint.
What Is True Gray Paint Color with No Undertones Look Like?
Before talking further about the choices of true gray paint color with no undertones, first of all, it is best for us to talk about what the meaning of no undertones is.
Surely, this also means that we will discuss a bit about paint color undertones since both are actually inseparable topics.
First of all, let us talk a bit about what undertones actually are.
To start with, you need to know that every interior paint color has two different types of tone in it. Those are mass tone and undertone.
The mass-tone is not hard to understand because it can simply be explained to be the predominant color of each paint color. This can be black, charcoal black, gray, cloud gray, green, olive green, and so on.
Usually, when people are looking for some paints to apply on their interior wall they only focus on the predominant color without realizing that basically, all predominant colors have undertone(s).
Undertone can be explained as a hint of another color that presents behind the predominant color or a different color that is showing the predominant color.
In other words, it can be said that when you apply a certain predominant color on interior walls later you will see that it looks like some other color can also be seen slightly through it and it looks like the predominant color does not really stay the same because of it. This color is called as the undertone.
In order to make it easier for you, let us talk a bit about some example. Since in this post the main topic is about gray color and Benjamin Moore brand, let us take an example of this brand.
The example is Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter HC-172 and how this paint looks like approximately can be seen in the picture above.
This paint color can be included in the category of light gray paint color and for you to know, this is, as a matter of fact, one from about 9 most favorite gray paint colors from this famous brand.
When it comes to undertone, Revere Pewter can be said to have a warm undertone.
Particularly the undertone is faint green or greige, which is known to be the combination of grey and beige colors. It is reasonable then if when we see this color there is some kind of beige color also pops up from it.
Another example is Benjamin Moore Rockport Gray HC-105, which is another favorite choice from the brand. Unlike the previous example, this one has a different undertone. It is purple..
Now that the explanation about undertones is (hopefully) clear, we can go back to the main question. What is true gray paint color with no undertones look like?
In simple words, a true gray paint color that does not have any undertones can be described as gray paint color that does not come with other tones popping out after we apply it on the interior wall..
So, it can simply be said that gray paint color with no undertones, which is also called as the true gray color, will stay as it is after you apply it on interior walls and no other colors will be showing through it.
Now that the question is answered, the next question then is; are there any gray paints that really do not have any undertones?
Well, it is too bad to tell you that actually there is not really gray paint color that does not have any undertone at all.
Although so, you do not need to worry because gray paint colors that only have super subtle undertones that they are very suitable to be considered as true and neutral are actually available.
Benjamin Moore is known to be the brand in which such gray paint colors can be found.
In the following, you will be able to find out 5 true gray wall paint colors with no undertones by Benjamin Moore.
Complete information about each color will also be included especially for you so check them out.
#1. Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray HC-170
The very first choice in the most remarkable gray paint color with no undertones is Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray HC-170. This one can be found in the Historical Collection of the brand.
As explained previously, even this paint color choice is included in the category of no undertones gray paint you always have to remember in your mind that there is actually no gray paint with any undertones at all. As for this one, the undertone is blue.
Even this Stonington Gray paint has a blue undertone, there is a reason why it is also suitable to be included in the category of no-undertone gray wall paint.
It is because the blue undertone is very subtle that the gray paint looks more like neutral gray paint instead of one that will show blue undertone after being applied to walls.
As a gray paint, this Stonington Gray is not actually the one that shows warm look. It shows cool look in the contrary.
This is maybe something that cannot be separated from the fact that it has a very subtle blue undertone.
Based on the fact, the elegant and timeless gray paint color is more suitable to be used in rooms in which cool atmosphere is found to be beneficial.
This also makes the cool-looking paint is not really suitable for bedroom area since warm look usually makes bedroom area better for comfortable rest.
Although so, it does not mean the paint totally cannot be applied in bedroom walls because it can if you want to.
Pairing it with white or black tones can even make the bedroom area gains a stunning contemporary look as shown in the picture above, in which the gray wall paint is paired more with white tones.
Other than white and black, this gray color paint by Benjamin Moore is also suitable to be paired with different shades of gray as shown in the same picture above.
Of course, some other colors other than gray can also be chosen as pairing for the gray wall paint. Some examples of the other colors can be seen in the two pictures below.
#2. Benjamin Moore Gray Owl OC-52
The next most awesome no-undertones Benjamin Moore gray paint is this Benjamin Moore Gray Owl OC-52. This paint color can be said to be included in the category of light gray paint.
When talking about undertones, it cannot be denied that this gray paint also has undertones. To be more specific, those undertones are blue and green.
Although so, you need to know that these undertones are super subtle that they are almost invisible to out bare eyes.
This is, as a matter of fact, something that makes the gray paint color generally acts like a light gray color.
Surely, this is also the reason why the paint color is suitable to be called as true gray paint color that will stay gray after being applied to interior walls.
Creating a beautiful interior space by using this Gray Owl color paint is not a hard thing to do. Here you just have to know the right color to be paired with the light gray wall color.
Naturally, pairing this paint color with white will create not only soft but also beautiful look. You can see an example of this in the eclectic bathroom design shown in the picture above.
The white color that is paired with the Gray Owl paint does not only come from the color of interior trims. It also comes from the color of bathroom appliances and accessories, including also the curtain and towel.
Of course, this Gray Owl wall paint is not only suitable to be used in bathroom interior.
Basically, it is suitable to be used in any room of the house, including also bedroom as you can see in the picture of the traditional gray-themed bedroom above.
As you can see in the picture, the existences of two sofa chairs with bluish-gray color, which seems to be flint gray color, is quite prominent.
However, it does not seem to affect the Gray Owl wall paint and does not make the super subtle blue undertone to pop up and become visible.
#3. Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray HC-168
Next, we have Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray HC-168 as another option of remarkable no-undertones gray paint. Just like Stonington Gray, this one also belongs to the Historical Collection.
Unlike the previous two paint colors, this one is not light. It is more suitable to be included in the category of darker gray paint colors instead. However, this paint color is not too dark.
For the undertones, these are very little. This is surely also the main reason why the paint color tends to act in a neutral way.
This makes the paint color to be suitable to use in both small and spacious room. Moreover, this is also known to be the paint color that is suitable to use not only in the interior but also exterior.
Using this paint color especially for home exterior can result in a fantastic look. This is especially when the paint is applied to the housing body.
When you are about to apply this Chelsea Gray paint in one or more rooms in your house, there is a useful tip that is recommended for you to follow.
The tip is none other but to provide an adequate lighting in every room when the paint color is applied.
The reason why adequate lighting is needed is related to the fact that the paint color absorbs light quite well. Without the adequate lighting, the interior space will only look rather heavy.
If you need some inspiration in using this gray paint color, you can check out some ideas below.
First, let us start with the following contemporary bedrooms for boys.
The bedroom shown in the picture above is a proof that Chelsea Gray paint, even it is considered a darker one, is also suitable to be used in the bedroom area. This paint does not even reduce the comfy atmosphere in there.
From the bedroom, we also know that natural light can also be taken advantage from in order to manage adequate light in the room. This way the paint will not make the room looks heavy.
The last but not least inspiration from this example is about color compatibility. It is very obvious that the Chelsea Gray paint looks very compatible with black and white color.
Another idea can be seen in the picture of contemporary dining room above. Even with darker gray wall paint, the dining area still looks inviting.
From the same picture, we also know that the gray wall paint can also look quite nice when paired with natural materials.
In the picture, the examples can be seen in the natural wood dining table and medium tone hardwood flooring.
#4. Benjamin Moore Storm AF-700
Here, another choice of true gray paint that is recommended to choose is Benjamin Moore Storm AF-700. This one is considered to have medium gray tone.
There are two types of undertones that this gray wall paint has. Those are greige and purple.
Since this paint color is included in the category of no-undertones, the greige and purple undertones are also known to be very very slight. It is reasonable then if these undertones are very hard to notice.
Being in the category of medium gray paint color, Storm still has the ability to absorb light although it is not as strong as the ability owned by darker gray paints.
Although so, there is no need to worry that applying this paint on your interior walls will create a too heavy feeling in there. Still, you are needed to consider about lighting properly when you choose to use this paint color.
If you choose this paint color, you should really consider pairing it with white interior trim. The reason is none other but that the combination of both will create a very decent look.
The first idea you can check out when about to use this Storm gray color by Benjamin Moore is shown in the picture of transitional living room above.
In this picture, the greatness of neutral characteristic of the gray wall paint is clearly show, which means that the very slight undertones are not an obstacle at all.
Here, the gray wall paint is not only paired with white color but also some other interesting colors. Those colors are not only some different shades of gray but also black, navy blue, caramel brown, and crimson red.
The next example is this not-so-spacious transitional kitchen.
As told before, the combination of Storm gray paint and white interior trim creates such a good look in the kitchen area.
The use more white color and more natural light in the kitchen area also makes the rather narrow space to look more spacious.
#5. Benjamin Moore Silver Chain 1472
The last but not least no-undertone gray wall paint is this Benjamin Moore Silver Chain 1472.
This is also known to be the true gray paint that will stay gray on wall regardless other items you place in the same interior space.
Of course, the meaning of no-undertone nickname given to this wall paint is not that the paint really does not have any undertones. As told earlier, factually all paint colors have undertones.
The nickname is given because the undertones of this gray wall paint are very subtle and are quite hard to notice.
The best thing about Silver Chain is that it also owns the characteristic silver color. It is making any interior space gaining a significantly elegant and luxurious look.
The example of this can be seen in the picture of transitional bathroom below.
The Silver Chain gray paint really helps in building the luxurious look in the bathroom design.
This is also supported well with the choice of the bathroom vanity, dressing table, tub, lamp, and even the choice of flooring.
Another example can be seen also from this picture of airy transitional living room design.
This design example proves that Silver Chain gray paint is not only suitable to choose to create a luxurious look. It is also a choice that you can pair with bright colors easily because of its true and neutral characteristic.
The collections of true gray paint color with no undertones are remarkable, aren’t they?
All of these paint colors act neutral, which means that even if they cannot totally be said to have no undertones, the undertones they have is very light or very subtle so it will be very hard for us to notice them.
While your curiosity about whether or not there are some gray paint colors that do not have any undertones is already answered, is there any choice from the list above that arrest your attention the most so you want to apply it on your interior or even exterior walls?
I just painted my entire living room and foyer BM Stonington Gray and there are TONS of blue undertones. So much so, that I have decided to repaint. It’s a beautiful gray depending on the light that hits your room, but beware: the blue is definitely there!
Thanks for the heads up, I have been looking high and low for the most neutral gray I can find to go on my ceiling, without very much of the undertones coming out…seems hopeless, beyond battle ship grey and that’s not happening!
What color gray did you eventually repaint it?
I, too, am in a love/hate relationship with all colors gray! I have spent weeks pouring over paint chips, buying samples, checking these samples on my walls at all hours of the day and night. I’ve researched paint colors, undertones, shades and even my house’s directional exposure to sunlight! Right now, I’m ready to break out a can of white paint and cover all the walls in my house and our rental house, Oh, no, I can’t even do that! White (known as the absence of color) also has undertones!! Then, I happened to come across this article from Benjamin Moore telling me about 5 gray paint colors with no undertones. Wait!
NO UNDERTONES!! This is what I’ve been looking frantically for all this time! I started inhaling the article. Then I came to the first subtitle, “What Is True Gray Paint Color With No Undertones Look Like?”. A grammatical error?? That’s not good. Ok, moving on. I’m almost finished and feeling pretty darn good. Silver Chain sounds really good. Then I saw the picture! The bathroom walls are all green! What the heck? I’m staring at this picture that is supposed to be a beautiful silver color (without undertones!), but it’s not! It’s as green as grass! Well, that’s it for me! I’m guessing God is trying tell me something—like, “Your walls are fine. It’s 4:00am, put that mess away and go to bed!” Night y’all!
We are looking for a gray without the undertones. Does your room have a lot of blue in it to bring this out or is it just there? We have black and gray in the kitchen but otherwise it is your normal beige and reds. What do you think.
I so agreeN. But I’m looking for something with yellow undertones, NOT brown. I’ve mixed paint, so I know there is such a thing… I’ll keep looking
I guess my question should have been – how did the blue tones show up since it is suppose to have no background tones?
I am painting the exterior of my house gray with white shutters and possibly a blue front door. My house is stucco. What do you suggest for a color that will pop and look good on stucco and what color door? My worry is that colors present much nicer on wood and siding than stucco.
What color did you decide on? I am struggling with “grays” as I am painting the exterior of my house( wood) and don’t want to end up with a blue house.
Yes, Stonington definitely has a blue undertone and most classify it as a blue-grey color.
so what color did you repaint it? Do you like it now?
I am going through the process of starting over again as well. It is painful. Have you selected the new gray to use?
I have a problem room with both south & north facing light & just painted Mindful Gray SW that has really strong blue/green undertones. I painted the same color in my son’s bedroom & it truly looks “griege”. I don’t know why the tones show up w/ no other blues in the room. Wanted more a a warm, gray to match gray rug, but it should work when pillows are made & ottoman recovered.
Every single bm gray paint has severe undertones magnified by the quality of the light in your room. With everyone hankering for a true gray and gray being so popular I don’t know why they cannot come up with a neutral gray pallet of say 10 shades of true gray. At least if you start with a basic mixture of black and white to get a true grayscale you won’t veer so much into blue or yellow or green or violet by the light in your room. This is so frustrating and I think it’s just a scam to get customers to buy tons of sample paints they can’t do anything with. And, in addition, the clerks in the store don’t know anything about color or how to customize it for you.
i mix my own paint…Always buy a gallon of 2 of white to add into your paint, I bought a grey color( can’t remember the name) all I did was keep adding White until it was the perfect gray color…And NO blue, green, violet, undertones came out
Buy Dolphin Finn from Behr….I bought a few gallons and also bought a few gals. of white.,,I just used a empty 5 gallon bucket, put 1 gal. of Dolphin Gray and kept adding whit until I got the perfect shade of Gray…It came out perfect!!!! I believe I added gallon to gallon but in the long run I have extra for touch up or whatever…The other gallon of Gray and white I played with and made it a few shades different to use in kitchen for a shade darker and then the top with the first mixture…I still have plenty of paint with enough to do 2 more room, hallway or whatever…It’s cheaper than buying samples that do nothing but waste money…
I absolutely agree. It has been incredibly frustrating & expensive
Benjamin Moore, with your expertise, please don’t let us down! Gray is so popular. Please reveal the most gray gray you carry! Thank you!
Hi I’m about to try “silver chain” that’s supposed to have the least undertone ….
I have already Re painted 3 times looking for a true grey.
Also tried mixing black &white to make grey ,but remember that black is always a made up colour so there are still undertones …. help !!!
Hi, did you like the Silver Chain paint color? Thinking of using it in our new home & picking paint colors is so hard for me!
I will go with Silver Chain for my new home.
Which shade of white is the most complementary for the trim and doors?
We painted my daughters room in Mindful Gray initially because I have it in my master bathroom and it appeared to be a “true gray”. It looked beige in her room without a hint of gray. We repainted in Silver Chain and it turned out perfect! With gray, it truly depends on the lighting.
We used gray owl and liked it since it was warm, not too dark, and did not have blue undertones. Natural light may affect the color.
We used gray owl…no undertones. Happy with this choice.
Great selection of colors!
Used Stonington Gray on the hallway and loved the blue undertones so much I repainted several other rooms with the same color. LOVE it!! Now looking for the right accent color to pair with it in the dining room.
Cement gray is the best there is for just a gray without blue/green/yellow. Obsessed
I bought a test sample of cement gray and it looks periwinkle purple. Gray owl has green undertones in my home. It’s so frustrating that I can’t find a decent gray out there.
I’m having the same problem. I’m trying to paint my fiberglass columns at my new house. Just need a true gray. Help! ASAP!!!!!
Stonington Gray looks pink in my dining room. Trying Silver Chain next.
Hello my fellow colorists,
Has anyone used Classic Gray? It’s a warm gray and one of the lightest of the off-white/grey palette. I live in an open floor plan loft space where light streams in from multiple locations. This reality offsets any possibility of applying any one gray color to be the same all the time as different times of the day produces its own undertone. Having experimented with many samples during various times of the year produced different undertones. I discovered that a true gray without undertones does not exist.
I hope that the takeaway from this insight is to focus on which undertone you are willing to accecpt. For me, it was a silver blue that revealed itself during the early afternoon from natural north window light. Although Classic Gray is a warm light gray it did not emit beige or yellow tones. After applying this color I’ve learned that the best way to control the effect you’re after is to illuminate the area with sufficient artificial lighting in the evening and applying the color where there will be lots of natural light. This way one has greater control as to which undertone will be tolerable.
I hope this helps. Good luck to everyone in search of the perfect gray!
Cheers,
Javi
Classic gray was flat out a creamy beige in my space, zero ‘gray’. I was sooo disappointed.
Yes—very warm tones showed up in artificial light. In my space where there isn’t a lot of natural light, I regretted using classic gray. When we painted in the basement, we found a better solution for dimly lit rooms—Paper White—it’s more of a white-gray and not a speck of yellow. We’re very pleased.
I used Gray Owl in my bedroom which has a lot of light but it’s north facing light. This color looks more gray during the day when the sun is shining bright, however, most of the day the blue undertone comes out – no doubt about it. I asked friends to come to the room and tell me what color they saw during different times of the day and they all commented “light or pale blue” or “bluish gray.” Back to the drawing board.
I would like to painting an accent wall in my teen retreat in Chelsea grey. I would love recommendations as to which colour I should paint the hallway. The teen retreat has a large window is an open space to the hallway.
Did SW Repose Gray in lower floor of house. It was, color-wise, all over the place. Beautiful in the sunroom, especially with grey linen sheers, my north-facing rooms, and cut by 25%, gorgeous in my upstairs bathrooms. But in darker areas of house, even specific walls that received less light, it looked heavy and not at all pretty. Recommend only for rooms with lots of light. In our next house we’re looking at BM Coventry Gray and Gray Owl, possibly with Classic Gray trim and doors.
I am going crazy trying to come up with the perfect grey for my kitchen cabinets. I would like something inbetween dark and light grey (I loved the Chelsea grey but hubby thought it was too dark) so back to the drawing board. The trouble is there is so many greys out there that I don’t know which to choose.
I have a townhome great room with north facing windows only. I had such a bad experience with gray in my last house (the walls seemed dirty rather than freshly painted), I’ve decided to do more research this time. I want warmth, and the Revere Pewter looks warm as does Storm. I’ve repainted so many rooms over the years – ugh – that I’m going to buy full gallons of my finalists! Any ideas would be appreciated!
Susan
I’m looking for a true gray for the basement which does not have any natural light and the carpet is in the blue/purple color family. What would you recommend? I don’t want it to be too dark because it’s a hallway.
I want to paint my house with Chelsea Gray. The dormers a lighter gray. Would you suggest silver chair or Stonington Gray for the best contrat together with Chelsea Gray? Also your favorite white trim to go with it. Thank you so much for your creative input!
Sooo frustrating trying to find a relaxing gray with a dark gray compliment color. Everything turns our the color of the undertone.
Benjamin Moore Baltic Gray (also called San Antonio Gray). Is the perfect neutral gray, it goes with any color you put with it and even makes oak cabinets look fantastic. Anything on that paint strip works well, too if Baltic Gray is too dark for you. Use the Aura paint to get the truest color out of this paint get Matte finish. You won’t be disappointed
I’m looking for a grey that has NO undertones .. Any recommendations?
I just painted a 1960s home without much natural light. I used San Antonio gray
ac-29 also known as Baltic Gray 1467.
in the entire home, however, I found that I had to use 4 different shades to achieve the look I wanted. The problem was that the San Antonio gray looked baby blue to charcoal depending on the reflection on the wall. I used 100%, 75%, 150% and 400%.
On the family room accent wall fireplace and lower wainscots I used 400% and 75% on the other walls. On the upper wainscot in the dining room and entry I used 150%. In the hall I used 100%. In the bedrooms, I used 150%, 100%, and 75%, as in the front entry. On the back porch I used 400%
So, in short, I have found grays to be a headache if you only use one shade.
We painted all of our interior walls with BM Silver Chain during our remodel two years ago. I tested eight! different grays in four areas of the house to find the perfect one. Two years later, I still love this color!
The outside was another story…. just had that finished a few days ago and wish I’d done some online research first. I chose SW cyberspace as I wanted a dark charcoal. It looks practically navy in the sun!
I was looking for the perfect gray without the blue undertones. After buying about ten different gray samples, I was ready to give up. I then tried Silver Chain, #1472 for one last try. Once I put it on my walls, I fell in love with it.
The gray is not too light or not to dark and it has no undertone. If you are looking for the perfect gray, try Silver Chain, #1472.
Just painted interior Revere Gray and really like it. going to paint kitchen cabinets anddo not want white what color tru gray should I use
We are also looking for the perfect light gray for a room with lots of windows, tons of nearby trees reflecting green into our home, but no direct light most of the day. After going through many samples, the dreaded undertones are getting the best of me. I think I’ve found the simplest solution by requesting my own color mix with all the same amount of RBG numbers so there are no dominant colors, just grey. This way, we won’t be seeing brown, purple, green, or blue! I’m going to get samples in a range of numbers to get a variety of light to darker shades of grey to see what will look best for us. For example, I’m going to try R222, G222, B222 and also R224, G224, B224. I may need to go with higher numbers such as 226 or 228 or higher to get the correct lightness I’m looking for. And I agree to what other said. So many people ask for a “true grey”. It doesn’t make any sense it is not offered in a variety of light to dark shades. When searching for colors look for those RGB colors listed for the colors you are looking at. They really will help you know what undertones are in the paint colors!
